The new footwear unit being promoted at Mayanur near Krishnayapuram by Evervan Kothari Footwear Pvt. Ltd., is expected to provide employment to 13,500 people. A large number of women are expected to be employed in women.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay laid the foundation stone of the unit at a function at the Collective in Karur on Friday.
It is part of an integrated footwear manufacturing project spread over 30.05 acres. The project is envisioned as one of India’s largest export-oriented footwear manufacturing ecosystems that will serve the world’s leading brands, including Adidas, and will serve both the domestic and international markets.
The facility is being converted into a state-of-the-art footwear manufacturing unit in a joint venture with Evervan Group, one of the world’s largest footwear manufacturers, under the umbrella of Phoenix Kothari Footwear Ltd.
According to sources, the company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government under which the state government has pledged to facilitate and support the implementation of the project. The project represents a major industrial investment in Tamil Nadu and is expected to contribute significantly through large-scale employment generation and women empowerment through meaningful and sustainable employment. It will boost exports and thereby boost foreign exchange earnings.
Sources added that ₹1,700 crore has been earmarked for the manufacturing facility. Upon completion, the plant was expected to produce approximately 40 million pairs of Adidas footwear annually for both domestic and export markets. The project would create employment for approximately 13,500 people, mostly women.
