England captain Harry Kane has confirmed a golf trip with US President Donald Trump

England captain Harry Kane has confirmed he played golf with US President Donald Trump around 18 months ago, describing the experience as “surreal” and saying the president has a “pretty good” golf game.

Trump revealed earlier this week that he and the Bayern Munich forward played together and praised Kane as both a footballer and a golfer after England’s 3-2 round of 16 win over Mexico.

Kane confirmed in Miami on Friday ahead of England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway that the pair met in Palm Beach, Florida after Trump invited him to play golf.

“I played well to be honest,” Kane told reporters. “He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach. So, yeah, when the president invites you somewhere . . .

“It was a pretty surreal experience just meeting him and of course playing golf with him. His golf is pretty good to be honest. I hope I can play as well as him when I’m his age. So yeah, it was a unique experience and I was grateful he invited me down to play.”

Trump first welcomed Kane to his Truth Social platform after the England captain scored in the win over Mexico.

“Harry Kane from England is a GREAT player!!!” Trump wrote.

The next day, the US president told reporters that the two had previously played golf.

“I think Kane is a great player,” Trump said. “I’ve played golf with him and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer. He’s really great.”

Kane has enjoyed a superb World Cup campaign, scoring six goals to move one clear of Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot as England prepare to face Norway for a place in the semi-finals.

Trump has featured prominently in the World Cup headlines this week after speaking to FIFA president Gianni Infantino about the suspension handed to American forward Folarin Balogun following his red card in the group stage.

FIFA later converted Balogun’s one-match ban to a suspended one, allowing him to take part in the Round of 16 against Belgium. Infantino said Trump’s intervention had no bearing on the disciplinary decision. Balogun featured in the match, but the United States were eliminated after a 4–1 loss to Belgium.
