(AP Photo/Gregory Bull) Lamine Yamal has added another milestone to his extraordinary rise after becoming the youngest player to make six FIFA World Cup appearances. The Spanish winger reached the milestone by featuring in his country’s quarter-final against Belgium, setting an all-time record for the most World Cup appearances by any footballer aged 18 or under. The achievement is the latest chapter in a career that continues to rewrite age-related records. Already a UEFA Euro 2024 winner with Spain, Yamal carried that form seamlessly into his first senior World Cup, establishing himself as one of the tournament’s best young players even before he turned 19.

A record that no teenager has yet achieved

Yamal was born on 13 July 2007, making his sixth World Cup appearance at 18 years, 11 months and 28 days.By appearing in Spain’s three games in the group stage, their Round of 32 win and now in the quarter-final against Belgium, he has surpassed every previous player aged 18 or under in World Cup history. His sixth appearance took him past the previous teenage benchmarks set by some of football’s biggest names and underlines how quickly he has become an indispensable figure for Spain on the international stage.

The World Cup breakthrough continues its remarkable rise

The 2026 tournament is Yamal’s first FIFA World Cup, having already helped Spain win UEFA Euro 2024.His biggest moment of the competition to date came during Spain’s 4–0 group stage win over Saudi Arabia on 21 June 2026.

At the age of 18 years, 11 months and eight days, Yamal scored Spain’s opening goal, becoming Spain’s second-youngest goalscorer at the World Cup behind Gavi, who scored against Costa Rica at the 2022 World Cup at the age of 18 years and 110 days. The strike also made Yamal one of the youngest goalscorers in the history of the tournament, making him the youngest player since Pelé in 1958 to score the opening goal of a World Cup match.

Prodigy Timeline

Yamal’s rise internationally has been remarkably rapid. He made his senior Spanish debut on 8 September 2023 against Georgia at the age of 16 years and 57 days, becoming Spain’s youngest ever player. On this occasion, he recorded a 7-1 victory and immediately became the youngest goalscorer in the country as well.

Less than three years later, he went from international debutant to World Cup record holder and established himself as one of Spain’s first names on the team sheet throughout the tournament.

How Yamal compares to the other teenage stars of the World Cup

Yamal’s success stands out even among the greatest young football talents.Pelé made his World Cup debut in Brazil in 1958 at the age of 17 years and 235 days, playing four matches, scoring six goals and winning the tournament. Despite his legendary campaign, he made fewer World Cup appearances as a teenager than Yamal had already amassed.Mexico’s Gilberto Mora, who made his World Cup debut in 2026 at the age of 17 years and 240 days, also finished with fewer appearances than the Spanish winger.Spain teammate Gavi previously held the benchmark for the country’s teenagers after playing four games at the 2022 World Cup before turning 19.

Even before the modern football giants

Yamal’s development has also accelerated far beyond the timelines of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Before turning 19, Messi made around 50 senior club appearances and scored nine goals before making his World Cup debut in 2006.Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, was still establishing himself at Sporting CP at the same age, not making his World Cup debut until 2006.In comparison, Yamal has already surpassed 50 professional goals and more than 50 assists for club and country in the three years since his Barcelona debut, while also becoming the youngest player ever to reach six FIFA World Cup appearances. At just 18, the Spanish winger continues to redefine what is possible for teenage footballers on the sport’s biggest stage.
