A 34-metre stretch of solar-covered bike path near the My Home Avatar junction in Narsingi is being removed to create a new connection to the existing vehicular underpass. The traffic police expects the move to ease congestion at one of the busiest junctions in western Hyderabad.
Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) has started dismantling part of the cycle path to create a new curve that will allow vehicles coming from Nanakramguda service road towards Nanakramguda to use the underpass instead of passing through the signal at My Home Avatar junction.
70,000 to 80,000 vehicles per day
According to the Cyberabad traffic police, around 70,000 to 80,000 vehicles pass through the junction every day towards Narsingi roundabout, Kokapet, the roundabout towards Nanakramguda IT campuses and the outer circle.
Narsingi Traffic Police Inspector P. Anjaneyulu said that nearly 50% of the vehicles using the junction go to IT companies in Nanakramguda, while another 30 to 40% travel to the Narsingi rotary, resulting in long queues both at the My Home Avatar junction and nearby Nanakramguda junctions.
“This step is expected to reduce around 30% traffic load at both junctions. Vehicles heading towards Nanakramguda will be able to use the underpass, reducing their signal wait. For motorists heading towards Narsingi rotary and Kokapet, the signal wait is expected to be reduced from the current 3-4 minutes to just a minute,” he said.

500 meters of cycle path turn unusable
As part of the project, almost 500 meters of the bike path between My Home Avatar and the intersection will become unusable. The traffic police said that the section in question is no longer used by cyclists and that this was taken into account before the proposal was approved.
However, the decision has drawn criticism from cycling advocates who argue that dedicated cycling infrastructure should not be sacrificed for increased car traffic.
Santhana Selvan, Hyderabad’s cycling mayor, said this was the second time a section of the cycle path had been removed, after about 100 meters had previously been dismantled to create a turn. “Although it may appear to be a small section, it is a gradual encroachment on cycling infrastructure. Vehicle roads will always be widened, but cycling infrastructure should not be compromised. If this continues, the track will eventually lose its purpose,” he said.
Commuters welcome the move
However, some commuters welcomed the move, saying long delays at the junction had become routine. Lisa, an IT worker who commutes through the stretch, said her taxi often takes 15 to 20 minutes to negotiate a U-turn and reach her office campus even after hours. “If it reduces the waiting time at the intersection, it will be a big relief for people working in the area,” she said.
The work is expected to be completed in around 20 days, after which traffic police will carry out trials to assess the impact of the new layout and determine any further changes needed to improve traffic flow.
As Hyderabad grows, so does the need to improve mobility at critical intersections.
