IIT Roorkee is in the limelight as flood water inundated the campus located in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district. A pioneer institute of civil and structural engineering became the center of viral memes as jokes as students used makeshift boats to navigate its lanes. The football and hockey fields turned into a quagmire as students scrambled to get around.

In a viral video shared by a 2026 batch student named Sakshi on Instagram, a boy in a blue shirt with the number 11 and Deepak print is seen rowing on cardboard.

Despite the rains, students can be seen playing ball in the fields and embracing the monsoon rains.

Interesting reactions on social media poured in as the students turned the flood water into a source of entertainment. While some called the situation a rowing club, others dropped the cheery comments.

Another user commented “is this what ppl do after they clear jee mains and advance?”

Weather today in Uttarakhand

Overall, Uttarakhand has been facing continued torrential downpours for the past few days. Heavy rains have triggered landslides in several areas amid a red alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In the Rudraprayag region, authorities have announced the closure of schools.

The Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers are flowing close to the danger mark, while the Rudraprayag district administration has advised residents and pilgrims to avoid being near rivers and streams and strictly follow the weather advisory. Heavy rainfall also disrupted traffic on 107 routes across the state, PTI reported.

The latest IMD weather bulletin said, “Very heavy to extremely heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Champawat districts of Uttarakhand. Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and very heavy to extremely heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Champawat districts of Uttarakhand.”

Flash flood warning has been issued for Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Nanital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garwal and Uttarkashi districts. Meanwhile, Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri and Bageshwar districts are on red alert today.

The Alaknanda River is currently flowing at a depth of 623,153 meters, a few meters below the warning level of 626 meters and the danger mark of 627 meters. The Mandakini River swelled to 622,230 meters against the warning level of 625 meters and the danger level of 626 meters, according to official data. In Ganganagar, the water level in the Mandakini river was recorded at 799,200 meters against the danger mark of 804 meters. At Gaurikund, Mandakini recorded 1,974,820 meters, slightly below the danger mark of 1,976 meters.
