Members of the public discuss solid waste management issues at the Jawaharnagar Landfill
A town hall meeting organized by the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation with public representatives from the corporation saw heat over the management of the solid waste management facility in Jawaharnagar and the pollution it causes.
Noting that development is everyone’s responsibility, Malkajgiri Member of Parliament Eatala Rajender suggested decentralization of solid waste management by setting up smaller scale processing facilities across the city.
Medchal MLA Ch. Malla Reddy lashed out at the concessionaire saying that they would not spend even three paise as part of corporate social responsibility, while their pledge was ₹35 crore. He demanded free water supplies and property tax waivers for residents affected by the dump.
LB Nagar MLA Sudheer Reddy said that women’s health is at stake due to dumping grounds and alleged that polluted water causes miscarriages. He also warned that the monsoons are close while the work on the strategic development of Nala is yet to be completed.
Uppal MLA B. Lakshma Reddy labeled the death of fish due to pollution from the dumping ground and complained that the stench from the yard was spreading up to Sainikpuri.
Maheshwaram MLA P. Sabitha Indra Reddy questioned the dumping of solid waste from three corporations in Jawahar Nagar and demanded that new facilities be set up on all sides. Patnam MLC Mahender Reddy promised to resolve the issue.
Commissioner T. Vijay Krishna Reddy spoke about the planned visit to the solid waste facility along with all members of the public. He informed about Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s instructions to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
