ENG vs IND: Harry Brook targets No.1 in T20I rankings after England seal series win over India

England captain Harry Brook is determined to top the ICC T20I Men’s Rankings after their series win over India and said becoming world No. 1 is now England’s main goal.

England’s commanding nine-wicket win in the fourth T20I at Bristol gave them an elusive 3-0 lead in the five-game series. A win in the fourth match in Southampton would see England replace India at the top of the ICC T20I men’s rankings.

“We’ve been told that if we win the next game we’ll go to world number one and that’s definitely the prize we’re looking at,” Brook said after the win in Bristol.

“India is a strong side. It probably hasn’t been as good as it has been in the last couple of years, but we’re really happy with how we executed our plans.”

“To beat India 4-0 would be a pretty special series win. To become world No. 1 would be even better. That’s our main goal. We want to go there and try to beat them convincingly again.”

Brook credited England’s ability to adapt quickly to conditions throughout the series, a factor he said made the difference against the reigning T20 world champions.

“We’ve got to go to Southampton, try to assess the conditions as best we can and that’s something we’ve done really well so far in this series,” he said.

The game in Southampton will coincide with England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with Brook admitting the cricket team will also have one eye on football.

“Being world No. 1 and England in the semi-finals, that would be pretty cool,” he said. “We’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on it and definitely watching the game.”

England’s revival under Brooke was remarkable. Since taking over the captaincy, they have won 19 of the last 22 completed T20Is, a run that included a semi-final appearance at this year’s T20 World Cup, where they lost to India.

Brook believes England’s recent performances are the result of steady progress rather than a sudden turnaround.

“The white-ball side is on a really good path, to be brutally honest,” he said. “We played extremely good cricket. We adapted to the surface and the conditions really well.”

“We had a good World Cup. We narrowly missed out on 250 in the Wankhede chase, which is unbelievable.

While the series win has lifted spirits around England cricket, Brook insisted his side are focused on getting the job done.

“I think it might have changed the mood a bit but we still have one more game to go. Hopefully we can get to world number one and beat a very strong Indian side.”
