Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha unveiled the logo of the Young Indian University of Physical Education and Sports in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Mr. Revanth Reddy, who laid down an ambitious plan to transform Telangana into a premier sports destination, launched the initiative and announced that the state would host several prestigious national and international sports events in the next few years.
Mr. Reddy said that no major tournament has been held in Hyderabad for the last 20 years and especially in the last 10 years, the sports facility has been converted into wedding halls and entertainment venues. “Compared to many countries, India continues to lag behind in international sporting events like the Olympics. Absence of a consistent sports policy over the years is one of the main reasons,” he said.
He noted that sports icons like PT Usha earned national recognition for their achievements and eventually rose to prominent public positions, including membership of the Rajya Sabha. “Success in sports comes only through sheer determination and hard work,” he said, urging the young athletes to strive for excellence with dedication.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to reward sporting excellence by providing cash incentives and government jobs to medal winners and outstanding athletes. He also announced that the Telangana Sports Academy would be established by December 2028.
Speaking on the occasion, PT Usha described the establishment of the university as a landmark initiative that will significantly boost India’s sports culture. She noted that the institution would integrate coaching, sports science, sports medicine, para sports and sports research into one platform and play a key role in producing future coaches, trainers, sports scientists, referees and sports administrators.
