Tragic! A 44-year-old former footballer died after drowning in a lake

Football (representative image) Former Romanian midfielder Gabriel Muresan died at the age of 44 after drowning in a lake near the town of Apold, where he served as mayor, according to a report by the AP news agency. Muresan, who became mayor in 2020, was remembered for both his football career and his service to the local community. The Romanian Football Federation confirmed the death of the former midfielder, who represented Romania nine times in World Cup and European qualifiers between 2007 and 2011.“The Romanian Football Federation offers its most sincere condolences to the family, friends and everyone who knew Gabriel Muresan,” it said.Apoldo’s local authority also paid tribute, describing Muresan as a “dedicated servant of our community” and acknowledging his contribution as mayor.Muresan enjoyed the best spell of his playing career in Cluj, helping the club win three Romanian league titles in 2008, 2010 and 2012. He also lifted three domestic cups during his six seasons at the Cluj club.He also gained valuable experience in the UEFA Champions League where he played in three campaigns in the group stage against top European clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United and Roma.
