Uttarakhand becomes India’s sixth fully literate state, ‘Collective effort towards Viksit Bharat,’ says CM Dhami | Today’s news
Uttarakhand has become the sixth fully literate state in the country under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and ‘ULLAS’ (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) programme, officials told news agency PTI on July 8.
The state has achieved a significant milestone after meeting the prescribed adult literacy standards set by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education, they said.
Following this, Uttarakhand Governor Lieutenant General (retired) Gurmeet Singh approved a proposal declaring the state fully literate.
Before Uttarakhand, five other states – Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim – have already achieved full literacy status.
Milestone for the State: Pushkar Singh Dhami
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called the achievement a “milestone” for the state.
He said that the active participation of the people along with the sustained efforts of the government played a key role in achieving this success.
Congratulating the people of the state, Dhami said, “Such collective efforts will help in realizing the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047. The government will continue to work with full commitment to bring digital literacy, financial literacy, further education and life skills to every citizen.”

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure that digital literacy, financial literacy, lifelong learning and basic life skills reach every citizen. He also expressed his hearty congratulations to the people of the state on his own behalf and on behalf of the government.
State Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat said becoming the country’s sixth fully literate state is a matter of pride for every citizen of Uttarakhand. He reiterated that the state government remains committed to providing quality lifelong education to every citizen in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and added that this achievement would serve as a major milestone in building a developed Uttarakhand.
Such joint efforts will help in realizing the goal of “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047.
According to officials, Uttarakhand’s literacy rate is currently over 98 percent.
