Patrol Jeep Insurance: Police register case against motor vehicle inspector
The dispute between the police and the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) in Wadakkanchery escalated and the police registered a case against the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) who fined the police jeep for allegedly lacking valid insurance and pollution control certificate (PUC).
A case was registered against MVI PV Biju on charges of obstructing a public servant in the discharge of official duties and allegedly tarnishing the image of the police by publicizing the incident through social media.
The dispute stems from an enforcement check carried out near the Uthralikavu temple shortly after 11pm on Monday. The MVD enforcement team impounded the police jeep involved in the night patrol led by sub-inspector Wadakkanchera and imposed a fine of ₹4,000, alleging that the vehicle did not have valid insurance and PUC certificate. The fine included ₹2,000 for alleged insurance and PUC violations.
However, police officials said verification of records at the station showed that the vehicle’s insurance was valid till March 7, 2027. They alleged that the inspector imposed the fine without verifying the insurance documents and relied only on information available on the Parivahan portal.
The police were also upset that the incident was publicized before the records were verified. They further challenged the ₹2,000 fine for the absence of a PUC certificate, arguing that such violations generally warrant a much lower fine.
Following the controversy, police released copies of the patrol vehicle’s insurance policy to support their claim that the insurance coverage was valid at the time of the inspection.
The motor vehicle department later said the fine was imposed because the insurance details were not updated on the Parivahan portal, leading to confusion.
Meanwhile, in a new twist, the police has released documents claiming that MVI PV Biju’s private vehicle itself did not have a valid pollution control certificate.
