Tottenham Hotspur Unlikely to Reunite with Mauricio Pochettino Soon Due to High Costs
Tottenham Hotspur fans dreaming of a sensational reunion with former manager Mauricio Pochettino may have to wait, as the financial implications make such a move unlikely in the near future.
Pochettino, who was sacked in 2019 just months after leading Spurs to their first-ever UEFA Champions League final, remains a beloved figure at the club. He holds the distinction of being the only Tottenham manager in the last 62 years to achieve a top-two league finish. Despite his departure, Pochettino has consistently expressed his affection for the club and has even hinted at a potential return one day.
With current manager Ange Postecoglou under pressure after a challenging season—likely to result in Tottenham’s worst league finish in two decades, albeit with a squad heavily impacted by injuries—Pochettino’s recent comments have reignited hope among fans. However, a swift reunion appears improbable.
Pochettino is currently under contract with U.S. Soccer as the head coach of the United States men’s national team until after the 2026 World Cup, which is still 15 months away. His contract is reportedly robust, and breaking it would require substantial compensation. BBC Sport estimates that the fee could be "one of the biggest" in football history, potentially reaching around $25 million (£20 million). While Pochettino’s annual salary is reported to be $6 million (£4.6 million), the cost to secure his early release would rival the fees paid for managers like Graham Potter (£21 million to Chelsea) and Julian Nagelsmann (a similar amount to Bayern Munich).
Given the financial hurdles, Tottenham may explore other managerial options if they decide to part ways with Postecoglou. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva are rumored to be on the club’s radar as potential replacements.
If Tottenham remains committed to a Pochettino reunion in 2026, Postecoglou could stay in charge for another season, giving him the opportunity to prove himself while also serving as an interim solution.
