Barcelona’s Right-Back Search Hinges on Kounde’s Future
Barcelona are expected to sign a new right-back this summer, but their transfer targets will reportedly depend on the future of Jules Koundé.
The versatile Frenchman has been Hansi Flick’s first-choice option on the right side of defense this season, starting nearly every game when not sidelined for disciplinary reasons. However, unlike teammates such as Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araújo, Koundé has yet to agree to an improved contract extension.
According to Mundo Deportivo, if the 26-year-old does not extend his current deal, which expires in 2027, Barcelona will look to cash in during the upcoming transfer window.
Potential Replacements
If Koundé leaves, Monaco full-back Vanderson emerges as Barcelona’s top target. Catalan outlet SPORT reports that the Brazilian is in "pole position" for a move to Spain. However, Monaco are expected to demand around €40m (£33.5m) for the 23-year-old.
Another option is Wesley, who recently earned his first senior call-up to the Brazilian national team. The 23-year-old could be available for approximately €35m (£29.3m).
Affordable Alternatives
Should Koundé stay, Barcelona have identified more cost-effective options. Rayo Vallecano’s Andrei Ratiu, valued at around €25m (£20.9m), has been linked with a move to Catalonia. Meanwhile, Almeria’s Marc Pubill, a member of Spain’s Olympic-winning squad, could be a cheaper option, especially as he currently plays in the Spanish second tier.
Another familiar name on the shortlist is Óscar Mingueza. The 25-year-old, who came through Barcelona’s youth academy and made 66 senior appearances for the club, joined Celta Vigo on a free transfer in 2022. Barcelona inserted a €10m (£8.4m) buy-back clause in his contract, which could facilitate a return.
Looking Ahead
Barcelona’s right-back plans remain fluid as they weigh Koundé’s future and their financial constraints. Whether they opt for a marquee signing or a more budget-friendly alternative, the club is determined to strengthen the position this summer.
