Hailing the rise of women’s cricket in India, former India captain Virat Kohli praised players like Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues for inspiring a new generation and raising the level of the game through their performances on the big stage.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter reflected on leadership, longevity, women’s cricket and the emotional significance of the franchise’s first IPL title during a recent episode of the RCB Podcast. Kohli also spoke candidly about his evolving relationship with the game and the impact he now hopes to leave beyond records and statistics.
His remarks come at a time when Indian cricket is witnessing a transitional period where young players are redefining the T20 bat, while women’s cricket continues to gain unprecedented visibility following the rise of the WPL.
Talking about the growth of women’s cricket, Kohli was full of praise Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues for their recent performances on the big stage.
“There is no doubt that Smriti has always had this very unique talent. She is very gifted and a natural timekeeper who is amazing to watch. It was amazing to watch her perform in the final,” Kohli said.
“I was proud of Jemmy for what she went through in the tournament. It felt like a predestined moment for her. She looked completely cleaned up, in her own world, just watching the ball. She didn’t feel like she was worried about chasing the record, the world champions or the strongest team. It showed amazing mental strength and resilience,” he added.

Kohli remains the top run-getter for his franchise in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League, amassing 484 runs at an average of 53.77 while scoring 167.75. His motivation though evolved beyond milestones and achievements.
“I’m at a stage in my life and career where I’m doing things that are meaningful. Even playing cricket, you get to a stage that goes beyond numbers and achievements. It doesn’t fulfill you in an organic way that goes with the love of the game. I’m at a stage now where I feel purpose is the impact you can leave on people,” Kohli said.
Kohli too he revisited the emotions of winning the IPL title final with RCB after almost two decades of waiting, a triumph which he described as one of the most meaningful moments of his cricketing journey. The title ended years of heartache for the Bengaluru-based franchise and cemented Kohli’s lasting bond with the team and its fan base.
Kohli also acknowledged that the younger batsmen’s fearless approach is a trend in evolving T20 cricket, while stressing the continued importance of technique and discipline.
“The talent is through the roof. Youngsters are growing up on strong, explosive cricket and their ability to clear boundaries and hit aggressive shots is phenomenal. But the game is still played 22 yards. You need technique, you need balance, you need some symmetry to play this game,” he said.
