‘Run fast friends’: Scary video captures Wayanad landslide near tunnel project site | Today’s news
Shocking video by Kalladi in Wayanad according to PTI, it shows a huge pile of mud descending on the road and bridge as several people, including women, try to overtake. “Run fast, friends. Take a picture,” an eyewitness can be heard saying in a short clip that was aired on TV channels and filmed from behind the bridge.
Mud has accumulated nearby, according to PTI Meenakshi Bridge in Kalladi as part of the ongoing tunnel road project connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. Heavy rain caused the mound to suddenly slide, uprooting trees and tearing down metal and fabric barriers erected at the site.
Visuals show narrow escapes as the mud flows over the bridge
The visuals showed landslide spilled onto the road and swept across the bridge like a wave, dragging alongside a parked tanker truck to the other side where several shops were located, PTI reported.
CCTV footage from one of those shops captured several people, including a woman, trying to escape the mud, only for it to hit them and the truck and drag them to the far end of the bridge, the report said. The truck then crashed into a jeep parked nearby. Visuals subsequently showed a man and a woman caught in the landslide emerging from a gap between two vehicles, completely covered in mud but alive, according to PTI. Several other men were also seen limping away, covered in mud.
People near shops fled the moment they saw mud breaking through the barricades, PTI reported. Visuals also showed a private bus, said to be used to transport workers to the construction site, being pushed into a nearby river by the landslide. It was later found lying half submerged with water flowing through it.
Later visuals showed the bridge and its surroundings buried under thick layers of mud as rescuers worked to find out if anyone was trapped underneath, PTI reported. Teams of police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed for the rescue operation.
According to PTI, the tunnel project connecting Anakkampoyil and Meppadi started last year and connects Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.
