In a shocking incident, street dogs allegedly ate an amputated limb at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Vijayawada on Thursday (May 14, 2026). The incident caused panic among the patients at the hospital.
According to sources, doctors at the hospital removed the infected limb of the person and put it in a plastic bag to be disposed of as biomedical waste. Personnel IV. class left the limb on the first floor. Meanwhile, the plastic bag (in which the amputated limb was kept) was picked up by a street dog and ran away.
Hospital staff were alerted by patients, carers and members of the public who noticed the dogs eating the limb. They chased the dogs away and brought the half-eaten limb back to the hospital. Patients claim that stray dogs were roaming freely in the hospital premises, causing panic among the public.
NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed the hospital authorities to take action against the negligent staff. Patients express concern about the carelessness of hospital staff in moving biomedical waste.
“An inquiry has been ordered as to how stray dogs reached the first floor and picked up the bag. Instructions have been given to GGH officers to ensure CCTV in the rooms where the bio-medical waste was kept,” the Collector told The Hindu on Friday (May 15, 2026).
