The Congress on Thursday (May 14, 2026) attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over media reports claiming that US authorities were dropping charges against billionaire Gautam Adani, saying it was now clear why the prime minister agreed to a “hopelessly one-sided” India-US trade deal and why he abruptly halted Operation Sindoor.
The attack by the opposition party came after media reports claimed that US authorities were moving to settle fraud charges against an Indian billionaire.
Reacting to the news, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said: “It is now clear why the Prime Minister agreed to a hopelessly one-sided India-US trade ‘deal’ which was in fact a theft by the US. And it is also clear why he abruptly halted Operation Sindoor on May 10, 2025, on Trump’s threats rather than our national interests.”
“The Trump administration is reportedly going to drop all corruption charges against Modani,” he said on X.
Mr. Ramesh asked how much more “compromised” could the Prime Minister be.
The Justice Department may announce that it is dropping the charges as early as this week. The Securities and Exchange Commission is also seeking to settle a parallel civil fraud case it filed against Adani and others in November 2024, the media claimed.
