Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy accused the Congress of raising the issue of hijab in light of developments around the Davangere South Assembly constituency. He said the hijab issue is in court and there is a stay order.
“I spoke extensively on the issue of hijab at the rally. People know my opinion on hijab. There is nothing new to add,” he told reporters here. “Can you justify removing the sacred thread from a student during a recent exam? Everything is done for politics. For Congress, political gain is more important than social peace. Congress, frightened by the way people voted, took this decision.”
Questioning the government’s silence on the hijab for three years, Mr Kumaraswamy said: “There is a Muslim convention on May 16. They took the decision under duress. Otherwise, they would have taken this decision soon after coming to power. It is about appeasing one community and the government does not respect the judiciary.”
