The Kannur Corporation on Tuesday (May 12) stopped the alleged unauthorized construction of a road in Nadal following complaints that a fake Public Works Department (PWD) board was erected at the site to mislead the public.
According to one of the residents, a private person built the road by destroying mangroves, claiming it was part of the proposed Nadal-Muzhappilangad beach bypass project. Suspicion arose due to the sudden works on the road, prompting the residents to file a complaint with the company authorities.
Mayor P. Indira and Public Works Standing Committee Chairman Rijil Makkutty visited the site and ordered the work to stop.
Mayor Indira said the road was laid for more than one kilometer by clearing mangroves on private land. She said the stretch covers about 30 acres and will connect Nadal to Muzhappilangad.
She added that the backfilling not only destroyed the mangroves but also disrupted the free flow of water in the region, which could lead to flooding. A complaint has also been filed with the RDO and further inspection will be done in the area, she said.
