Several areas in and around Thripunithura were severely affected by the prolonged power outage due to heavy rain and wind that lashed the region on Tuesday (May 12). Power supply could not be restored even after 24 hours in several areas, knocking out normal life and sparking protests.
Eroor, Thripunithura town, Maradu, Panangad and Udayamperoor under Thripunithura sub-division witnessed power cuts with about 60 electric poles damaged after trees fell on power lines. Lines broke in more than 25 places. The Ullas Nagar area suffered extensive damage and four power poles were destroyed in this locality alone. Power from 80 transformers was interrupted on Tuesday, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) sources said.
Only commercial establishments equipped with backup power could operate in the city on Wednesday (May 13). Shops and households that rely on inverters were also plunged into darkness in the evening after the backup power was exhausted. Many residents had to recharge their cell phones from their cars.
KSEB officials said the restoration work is underway. “In Thripunithura, 90% of the 11kV lines were charged by Wednesday evening. The damaged low-voltage lines will be restored by Thursday evening (May 14),” said an official from Thripunithura sub-division. While 26 low voltage poles were damaged in Thripunithura, seven 11 kV poles and 18 low voltage poles broke in different parts of Maradu. The official said power supply was fully restored in Eroor and Panangad on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, councilors led by Maradu Municipal Chairperson Ajitha Nandakumar and residents held a meeting at the KSEB office to protest the delay in restoration of electricity supply.
