Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has written to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to urgently intervene and resolve the difficulties faced by aquaculture farmers due to a sharp rise in prices of shrimp feed ingredients.
Mr. Naidu pointed out that rising prices of raw materials used in the production of shrimp feed have resulted in an additional burden of nearly ₹25,000 per tonne on farmers, which has increased the cost of cultivation.
He urged the center to take immediate measures to regulate the prices of shrimp feed ingredients.
The chief minister expressed concern over the continued rise in feed costs and warned that sustained price hikes could discourage shrimp farming and potentially reduce production. He noted that such developments could adversely affect both the livelihood of farmers and the overall aquaculture ecosystem.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the Center to ensure adequate availability of raw materials for domestic use and proposed to ease import restrictions on soybean meal and soybean oil, which are major ingredients in the production of shrimp feed. He stressed that making feed available at affordable prices is essential to sustain aquaculture and prevent further hardships among farmers.
Further, Naidu suggested setting up a specialized monitoring mechanism to keep an eye on feed price fluctuations and ensure transparency in the supply chain. He emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between the Center and the state government to solve the problems faced by aquaculture farmers and ensure long-term sustainability of the aquaculture industry.
