Amul and Mother Dairy – India’s largest dairy retailers – on Wednesday (May 13, 2026) raised milk prices by ₹2 per litre, adding to inflationary pressures already created by the war and squeezing household budgets.
The increase, the second by two dairy cooperatives in 13 months, is expected to prompt similar increases by regional dairy companies.
According to the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the price of milk across India has increased by ₹2 per liter since May 14 due to rising input costs. This represents an increase of around 2.5% to 3.5%, which she said is still lower than the average rate of food inflation. The GCMMF noted that this is the first hike in Amul milk prices since May 2025.
The cooperative attributed the increase to growth in operating and production costs, including higher costs for cattle feed, milk wrap and fuel.
It also said member unions have increased the procurement price paid to farmers by ₹30 per kg fat, a 3.7% increase compared to May 2025.
The GCMMF said that nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products is passed on to milk producers. The federation said the aim of the latest revision is to ensure favorable prices for dairy farmers and encourage higher milk production.
Revised maximum retail prices (MRP) for major variants of Amul milk in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Saurashtra and Kutch regions, will be published separately.
Mother Dairy further said it has revised the consumer prices of its liquid milk variants by ₹2 per liter with effect from Thursday (May 14).
Mother Dairy said: “The review was necessary in view of the sustained rise in purchase prices for farmers, of around 6% over the past year, despite ongoing efforts to limit the impact on consumers”.
He further said that this price revision represents only a partial pass-through of increased costs and is aimed at “maintaining a fair balance between the welfare of farmers and the interests of consumers”.
Mother Dairy said the prices of toned milk (over the counter) have been increased to ₹58 per liter from ₹56 per litre. Whole milk (poached) will cost ₹72 per litre.
