Leaders of the Andhra Pradesh Women’s Federation have demanded the immediate arrest of Bandi Sai Bhageerath, son of Union minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar, in connection with the alleged case of sexual assault of a minor girl in Hyderabad.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, federation officials Orsu Bharati and Panchadarla Durgamba claimed that though a case under the POCSO Act was registered at the Pet Basheerabad police station on May 8, the accused was yet to be arrested.
The leaders expressed concern over what they described as delays in police action and attempts to weaken the case and questioned why the accused was not taken into custody days after the FIR was registered. They also alleged that the authorities had adopted a “delayed approach”, referring to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Ms. Durgamba argued that influential people often received preferential treatment under the law, while ordinary citizens were subjected to stricter enforcement. She urged the Telangana police to act quickly and ensure justice for the victim.
The federation leaders also demanded that Mr. Sanjay Kumar should resign from the Union Cabinet pending the completion of the investigation. They urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order a comprehensive probe into the allegations.
This women’s organization further sought speedy trials and stricter laws that would ensure severe punishments for crimes against women and children.
