A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday (May 13, 2025) demanding that the Center “replace or fundamentally restructure” the National Testing Agency (NTA) following the scrapping of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for 2026 medical admissions in colleges across the country.
The NTA canceled the exam held on May 3 due to the leak of question papers and widespread irregularities in the conduct of the exam. More than 22 thousand students appeared in the national examination. NTA has announced a re-test.
A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe has been ordered into the leak. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has urged the need for a “more robust, technologically advanced and autonomous body to conduct NEET”.
It said the court should intervene directly and appoint a high-powered monitoring committee, chaired by a former high court judge and with members including a cyber security expert and a forensic scientist, to oversee the re-run of the exam and ensure there are no further leaks.
“Manage the re-run of NEET-UG 2026 under the strict supervision of a judicially appointed high-powered committee until the interim monitoring committee constituted by the apex court verifies and verifies the security of the revised examination process,” the petition demanded.
The plea, filed by advocate Tanvi Dubey, urged the government to order “digital locking” of question papers and switch to a computer-based test (CBT) model, as proposed in the wake of previous leaks, to eliminate physical supply chain risks.
FAIMA further sought a direction to the CBI to submit an investigation report to the apex court in four weeks. The report, petition must include details of the networks operating behind the leak; arrests made; accused persons; and the course of criminal prosecution.
The petition states that the NTA must release the NEET-UG 2026 midterm results immediately to enable transparent detection of abnormalities.
