Two persons were arrested for stealing 45 pieces of gold jewellery, two kg of silver articles and ₹15,000 in cash from the house of a former government school teacher in Tirupattur on Tuesday.
Police said the arrested persons have been identified as G. Nagaraj, 60, and his accomplice, B. Vaishnavi, 26. They are residents of KGF Colony in Karnataka. Initial investigation revealed that the victim, K. Manohar, 66, had been living with his wife, M. Chitra, 57, in Tirupattur for many years. On April 9, the couple left for Chennai to meet their relatives.
Police said when the couple returned, they noticed gold earrings on the floor of the home. The couple checked the cupboard and found that 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery, two kg of silver items and cash were missing. The CCTV cameras in the house were also damaged. Acting on a tip-off, the Tirupattur city police rushed to the house with forensic experts and fingerprints were taken.
Police have also secured CCTV along the route where the house is located. Superintendent of Police Shymala Devi has formed special teams to nab the suspects. Police analyzed CCTV cameras in the area and found that two persons were roaming in the area on the day in question. Mobile phone signals were also traced to identify the location of the suspects and they were arrested from their hideout in KGF Colony. They were later accommodated in a bog in the town of Tirupattur. Another probe is underway.
