A former army personnel who was accused of killing three individuals in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district was killed in an encounter, police said on Tuesday (May 12, 2026).
Two policemen, including a sub-inspector, sustained injuries. Suspect Gurpreet Singh, 46, a resident of Amritsar, Punjab, allegedly accidentally killed two individuals in a train and another in a hospital within 24 hours, Superintendent of Police (SP) Akash Patel said.
The encounter took place on Monday (May 11, 2026) at around 10.30 pm when the accused was taken to Sakaldiha village in Uttar Pradesh to recreate the crime scene.
“During the exercise, the accused got hold of a policeman’s pistol and tried to escape by firing at the team,” said the Superintendent of Police.
“While being chased by the police, Singh fired at them once more but was shot in the chest and abdomen in the return fire,” Mr Patel said. “Singh was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead by the medical staff. A sub-inspector and a constable also sustained gunshot injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital,” the superintendent of police added.
The district police provided background information about the accused and said that the 46-year-old man had joined a security post in Bihar after his retirement from the army.
However, he was terminated due to excessive alcohol consumption, which subsequently worsened his mental health. Singh committed his first murder on 10 May while traveling between Prayagraj and Chandauli. “In the morning, Singh killed a man named Mangru, a resident of Zamania in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district, in the PDD-Tarighat Passenger train,” the Superintendent of Police said.
Later, around 2 am on May 11, Singh shot another passenger in the head while traveling in the Jammu-Tawi Express. Then, on the same day, the accused entered a private hospital posing as a patient and murdered the patient, Laxmina Devi, a resident of Bhabhua in Bihar.
