Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MLA from Maniktala, Tapas Roy, was sworn in as the Pro-Tem Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly. Governor RN Ravi administered the oath to Mr. Roy on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) at the Lok Bhavan.
Mr. Roy is among the senior MLAs elected to the 18th Legislative Assembly of West Bengal. According to party sources, Mr. Roy may be nominated for the post of Speaker.
The oath-taking of the other MLAs of West Bengal will be held on Wednesday (13 May 2026) and Thursday (14 May 2026). The election of the chairman will take place on Friday (15 May 2026), 15 May. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was present at the swearing-in of the pro-Tema Speaker. After taking the oath, Mr. Roy took a dig at the Trinamool Congress regime and said that parliamentary processes were not followed during Mamata Banerjee’s rule.
On Tuesday morning (May 12, 2026), Mr. Adhikari was present at the swearing-in ceremony of Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of Assam. From there he returned to Calcutta and went straight to Lok Bhavan. Several ministers and elected MLAs were also present. The gathering is decorated with saffron lights from Tuesday (May 12, 2026).
While the BJP government started functioning from Nabanna, where the first cabinet meeting was held on Monday (May 11, 2026), the seat of power is likely to return to the Writers Building, where the Left Front governments used to function. Writers Building and Nabanna are also decorated with saffron lights. This marks a departure from the blue-and-white colors that dominated government establishments during the Trinamool Congress regime.
