The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has defended the ongoing probe into the alleged POCSO case against Union Minister Bandi’s son Sanjay Kumar, accusing the BJP of trying to politicize and caste color the criminal issue involving a minor girl.
In a statement on Tuesday, TPCC President B. Mahesh Kumar Goud said the Congress believes that neither the caste origin nor the social status of the accused or the complainant has any relevance in cases related to the protection of minors.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Bandi Sanjay Kumar is trying to introduce a caste narrative into a serious criminal matter and portray himself and his family as victims on that basis,” he said, adding that the case is purely a criminal charge and that the trial is being conducted in accordance with due process.
The Congress chief also criticized the BJP for allegedly trying to play down the seriousness of the allegations while simultaneously campaigning on slogans related to women’s safety and ‘Nari Shakti’.
Mr Goud was referring to reports which claimed that the family of the minor girl had been subjected to threats and intimidation. He said that if such allegations are substantiated, strict legal action will be initiated against those responsible.
“The Congress party has always stood on the side of the weak. This time too, the party will stand by the minor girl irrespective of the origin of the perpetrator,” he said.
