The three-member committee of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has decided to allocate 21 tmc ft of water to Telangana for drinking water needs from Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar reservoir and 10 tmc ft of water to Andhra Pradesh from Nagarjunasagar till August 15.
A committee comprising AP and Telangana Chief Engineers K. Narasimha Murthy and OV Ramesh Babu, respectively, and River Authority Member-Secretary Satish Kamboj reviewed the availability of water in both the common reservoirs and decided to allocate 31 tmc ft of water to the two member states to meet drinking water needs till August 15.
In its letter dated April 29, AP had given an indent of 10 tmc feet from Nagarjunasagar for drinking water needs till the end of May. Similarly, in its May 2 bullet point, Telangana has set a requirement of 18 tmc ft of water for drinking water needs – 13 tmc ft from Nagarjunasagar and 5 tmc ft from Srisailam by June 30. However, after the 10 tmc ft AP allocation from Nagarjuna till August, he demanded 5 to 16 tmc ft. drinking water needs.
Telangana has placed a bullet point for drinking water needs in Hyderabad City, Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam districts. It opposed any allocation of fresh water to AP on the grounds that it has already withdrawn much higher amount of water compared to the allocated allocation and any allocation of fresh water would lead to drinking water crisis in Telangana.
On Tuesday morning, the gross water storage in Srisailam was 39.2 tmc ft and in Nagarjunasagar it was 157.6 tmc ft as of 6 pm on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the 21st meeting of the river board is likely to be discussed at the May 14 meeting where other issues such as water use by the two member states during the 2026-27 water year, installation of telemetry equipment and other outstanding issues will be discussed.
The meeting will be attended by the Chairman and other members of the Board, Secretaries Irrigation/Water Resources and other senior officials/engineers of the Irrigation/Water Resources Department.
