Although there is uncertainty over the declaration of SSLC results this year, teachers’ organizations at the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) monitoring committee meeting on Tuesday demanded that the results be declared as scheduled this week.
The impasse over the appointment of the Congress chief minister and the delay in government formation has cast doubt on Friday’s announcement of the SSLC results, as announced earlier by outgoing general education minister V Sivankutty.
After processing the final stage results, the SSLC examination board will meet on Wednesday to approve the results. The final results will be ready for publication on Thursday. Whether they will be announced on Friday remains to be seen, although officials are optimistic about it.
Exam results are usually announced by a minister, but in 2019, the then general education minister A. Shajahan announced the results instead of the then minister A. Raveendranath as there was a model code of conduct.
Damage to reputation
The Kerala School Teachers’ Association pointed out in the meeting that uncertainty over the declaration of results could tarnish the reputation of the public education system and disrupt school admissions this academic year.
Teachers’ organizations claim that Sharmila Mary Joseph, who is general education secretary and general education director of NSK Umesh, can declare the results in a time-bound manner. Any delay will postpone the admission process to the Plus One upper secondary course. Changes in the government should not come in the way of students’ opportunities for higher studies, the All Kerala School Teachers’ Union has pointed out.
Please note that CBSE Class X as well as ICSE Class X and XII results are already out. Officials say they have done their best to speed up the announcement of the results, even though the evaluation of the answers did not start until April 16 this year due to election preparations.
School fitness
With the chief secretary on Wednesday calling a meeting of district collectors on the issue of health fitness of schools, teachers’ organizations demanded that steps be taken to issue health fitness certificates in time for the reopening of schools as in previous years.
Textbook
The Director of General Education informed the meeting that the textbooks will reach the schools by the end of May as dues of Rs 6 lakhs to Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd have been released. The remaining 7.5 million will be sanctioned soon. The meeting discussed a five-day online training for teachers due to the unavailability of funds. However, teachers’ organizations demanded that the training be conducted offline, albeit slightly shortened.
