Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insisted his side remain firmly in the Premier League title race despite Arsenal opening a five-point deficit at the top. late win over West Ham United on Sunday.
Ahead of City’s clash with Crystal Palace on Wednesday, Guardiola said Arsenal’s result did not put any extra pressure on the defending champions, who still have a game in hand.
“The same as two days ago, three days, four days ago,” Guardiola told reporters when asked about the pressure of the title race.
“From my career as a manager, I’ve learned what you can’t control, forget about it. To do better what you didn’t do better this season. To come in a better position to fight for the Premier League, which we’re still fighting for.”
City know victory over Palace would cut Arsenal’s lead to two points with two games remaining and keep the title battle alive going into the final stretch of the season.
However, Guardiola warned against underestimating Palace despite their recent league form. The Londoners are winless in their last four Premier League games but are preparing for the biggest game in their history – the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27.
“They have a European final,” said Guardiola.
“Maybe we’re struggling a little bit with a lot of changes in the Premier League. The manager (Oliver Glasner) is leaving… and maybe they haven’t been consistent but the quality is there.”
Guardiola also provided updates on the fitness of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and defender Abdukodir Khusanov, saying both players were feeling much better, although he stopped short of confirming whether they would start against Palace.
With City facing Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday before traveling to Bournemouth three days later, Guardiola admitted that squad rotation may be necessary during the hectic start.
“After three days we travel to London, then come back and play Bournemouth. So of course… I have to think about that,” he said.
Guardiola also dismissed concerns that Palace could rest players against Arsenal later this month to prioritize their European final.
“The teams are so professional. Crystal Palace will play top against Arsenal,” he added.
