New Delhi: People of West Bengal are about to get access to Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (Ayushman Bharat)PM-JAY), Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday.
The announcement, shared through the prime minister’s official X account, aims to transform West Bengal’s medical infrastructure.
The scheme provides health cover ₹5,000,000,000 per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization targeting the bottom 40% of the population.
The mint announced on May 8 that the BJP plans to introduce the scheme after its victory in West Bengal.
The priority of the new government
Since the scheme’s inception, its implementation in West Bengal has been mired in administrative disputes and political confrontation.
The rollout has significant significance for the governance agenda of the new administration following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s landslide victory in the West Bengal assembly elections. The BJP won 207 seats to unseat the All India Trinamool Congress, ending Mamata Banerjee’s tenure and bringing Suvendu Adhikari to power as Chief Minister.
With the state’s integration into the system, millions of residents are expected to gain access to cashless treatment in a nationwide network of public and private hospitals.
Modi emphasized that the primary motivation for this expansion is the direct benefit to the local population, ensuring that financial constraints do not act as a barrier to life-saving medical procedures.
He also highlighted the administrative synergies expected under the “twin-engine” model of governance and indicated that the alignment of state and central policies will accelerate the delivery of various public services.
“The welfare of my sisters and brothers of West Bengal is paramount! I am very happy that the people of the state will have access to Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest healthcare system that provides superior and affordable healthcare. At the same time, the twin-engine government will ensure seamless delivery of key central systems,” Modi said at X.
Ground implementation
Implementation is expected in the coming days. “The timeline for the implementation of PM-JAY in West Bengal is being considered,” said an official close to the development.
Experts said the ‘portability’ feature of Ayushman Bharat – allowing beneficiaries to seek treatment at any empaneled hospital irrespective of their home state – will be particularly beneficial for the state’s migrant workforce.
The emphasis is now on implementation at the field level, including identification of beneficiaries and involvement of local health institutions to ensure that ‘top-notch healthcare’ becomes a reality for every household in the state.
Inclusion West Bengal follows the precedent of Delhi and Odisha where the scheme was adopted only after a change in administration. This transition marks the end of regional disputes and finally brings these states into a unified national health system under Ayushman Bharat.
