French Open organizers have handed a wild card to Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils to ensure two of tennis’ most beloved veterans get one last shot at Roland Garros before bringing the curtain down on their careers.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka and French fan favorite Monfils, who are expected to retire at the end of the 2026 season, were among the wild card holders announced on Monday for the clay-court major, which starts on May 24.
For Wawrinka, the wildcard marks an emotional return to the venue that produced one of the defining moments of his career. The 41-year-old Swiss stunned Novak Djokovic in 2015 final, where he won his only French Open title, producing one of the most memorable performances of his career. He also defeated Roger Federer in the quarterfinals during this remarkable run.
Despite dropping to world No. 125, Wawrinka remains a revered figure in Paris, where he owns a strong record and consistently displays some of his best tennis. He has reached the final twice and the semi-finals once in 20 previous appearances, building a lasting connection with the tournament.
The inclusion of Monfils carries a similar emotional weight, especially for the home crowd.
Home favorite Monfils says goodbye at home
The 39-year-old Frenchman has long been one of the funniest and most charismatic players on tour. Monfils, ranked 222nd, will make one more appearance at his home Grand Slam, where his electrifying athleticism and crowd-pleasing style have made him a fan favorite for nearly two decades.
The best of Monfils Roland Garros was held in 2008 as he reached the semi-finals before losing to Federer. He also made three quarter-finals and compiled an impressive tournament record over the years.
French Open organizers have confirmed that both players will be honored after their final matches in Paris, adding a fitting touch to what could be an emotional farewell.
The men’s wild card list also included Nishesh Basavareddy, Titouan Droguet, Hugo Gaston, Arthur Gea, Moise Kouame and Adam Walton.
In the women’s draw wild cards were awarded to Clara Burel, Ksenia Efremova, Fiona Ferro, Leolia Jeanjean, Emerson Jones, Sarah Rakotomanga, Alice Tubello and Akasha Urhobo.
As younger stars continue to shape the future of tennis, Roland Garros pauses to celebrate two veterans whose careers helped define an era.
