The IPL 2026 play-off race has reached a critical stage and Tuesday’s clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad could have a huge say in how the top four will eventually line up. With Royal Challengers Bengaluru, SRH and GT all tied for 14 points, net run rate is increasingly important, making every match and every over count in the closing stages of the league stage.
SRH head into the competition in second place after hitting form at the right time. Their commanding victory over Punjab Kings by 33 runs again showcased their batting power after amassing 235 for 4 in Hyderabad. Yet Pat Cummins’ side know there is little room for error in the tournament as the play-off race remains too close for comfort.
GT on the other hand have quietly turned their season around after a slow start. Their emphatic 77-run victory over Rajasthan Royals lifting them to third in the table and reinforcing the feeling that Shubman Gill’s side are beginning to find their best rhythm at the business end of the season.
BALANCE IS KEY FOR SRH
SRH have once again established themselves as one of the most dangerous batsmen in the tournament. The top combination of Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen consistently put opposition attacks under pressure with their fearless approach.
Their aggressive intent is reflected in the numbers. SRH have crossed the 200-run mark eight times this season, including a mammoth 249 against Mumbai Indians, underlining the explosive nature of their batting unit.
The return of captain Pat Cummins from injury has also boosted the bowling attack considerably. Cummins brought intensity and aggression back into the side, while Sri Lankan pacer Eshan Malinga emerged as one of the standout performers of the season. With 16 wickets to his name, Malinga has regularly produced breakthroughs and impressed with his control in pressure situations. Pat Cummins alongside Ishan Kishan for Sunrisers Hyderabad. At the same time, SRH’s aggressive batting approach exposed their vulnerability at times. Early wickets often put pressure on a middle order that looked fragile at times, while lapses in the field also prevented the side from fully dominating matches.
SHUBMAN LEADS THE GT CHARGE
Much of Gujarat’s revival revolved around captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, who gave the side consistency and stability at the top. GT’s batting philosophy largely focused on building a platform before attacking in the second half of the innings, an approach that worked effectively both in the chase and setting up totals.
The presence of experienced players like Jos Buttler and Washington Sundar has bolstered the middle order, while the bowling attack has started to perform with more consistency in recent matches. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada have provided the top pace and aggression while Rashid Khan continues to dominate the middle overs with his ability to break partnerships.
GT’s bowling unit, which struggled for rhythm earlier in the season, now looks much more settled as the overseas quicks have adapted better to the Indian conditions. However, the Titans should still be wary of their tendency to over-rely on the lower middle order when the top order fails, an issue that hurt them during a difficult run earlier in the campaign.
Adding an emotional touch to Tuesday’s high-stakes contest, Gujarat Titans will also take to the field in a special lavender jersey as part of a cancer awareness initiative. The franchise announced the move ahead of the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, continuing what has now become an annual tradition. Through this initiative, GT aims to spread awareness about the importance of timely medical care and extend support to those affected by the disease.
GT vs SRH: HEAD TO HEAD
GT have dominated this tournament since entering the IPL, winning five of the six meetings between the two sides. Their record in Ahmedabad is even more impressive with the Titans having won all three previous encounters against SRH at the venue.
GT vs SRH: AHMEDABAD PITCH REPORT
The first few matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium this season have seen excellent batting surfaces, but the pitches have slowed down a bit in the recent matches. Chasing sides have won three of their last five matches here, suggesting conditions tend to improve later in the evening.
Since dew is also expected to play a role, the captain who wins the toss is likely to opt to bowl first.
GT vs SRH: AHMEDABAD WEATHER FORECAST
Ahmedabad is expected to experience hot and dry conditions, though temperatures are likely to drop gradually during the evening. Dew is expected to become a significant factor in the second innings and could make it difficult to defend totals.
GT vs SRH: PREDICTED PLAYING XI
