Former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress leader Sujit Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Monday (May 11, 2026) in a recruitment scam case.
Mr Bose, who served as fire and emergency services minister in the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government, was questioned for several hours by the Central Investigation Agency before being taken into custody.
“Sujit Bose illegally recommended 150 candidates for various posts under the South Dum Dum Municipality in lieu of monetary benefits. ED traced direct proceeds of crime in the form of flats he got instead of providing jobs in the municipality to various persons. ED also traced huge deposits of cash in bank accounts under his control,” the statement said.
The investigating agency said Mr. Bose would be produced before a special court on May 12. The Trinamool leader was summoned by the ED on various occasions during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign.
Mr. Bose lost to BJP’s Sharadwat Mukherjee in the Bidhannagar assembly segment by a margin of 37,330 votes. The Trinamool leader has won elections three times since 2011 in Bidhannagar.
The probe agency came across the municipal recruitment scam while probing a school recruitment scam in the state in 2023 when searches were conducted at various premises associated with Ayan Sil, an aide to ousted Trinamool Congress leader. Several incriminating documents were obtained during the search, along with digital evidence that was seized from Mr. Sil’s possessions.
“Scrutiny of the incriminating documents revealed that the fraud is not limited to the recruitment of teachers but also involves several other appointments by various municipalities (including Kanchrapara, New Barrackpore, Kamarhati, Titagarh, Baranagar, Halisahar and South Dum Dum) which includes the recruitment of mazdoors, sweepers etc,” said an ED press release in October 2025.
