The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has launched the ‘Karnataka Advanced Attendance Management System (Kartavya-KAAMS) to identify and monitor the attendance of permanent teaching and non-teaching staff and officials.
Kartavya-KAAMS is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Geographic Information System (GIS) powered facial recognition mobile application.
From the academic year 2026-27, it is mandatory for teaching and non-teaching staff to register their attendance in the application twice a day from the place where they are on duty.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced in the State Budget 2025-26 that Kartavya-KAAMS will be implemented in all departments.
Government employees can download this mobile application and register under the KGID number registered in HRMS and record attendance at their workplace.
DSEL is the largest government department and a large number of permanent teachers work in government primary and secondary schools and as office staff. However, attendance tracking that takes place through a physical or decentralized mechanism is not administratively efficient and consistent.
For the continuous professional development of teachers and to ensure the improvement of the quality of education, the effective implementation of government policies and educational reforms, educational programs are implemented to increase subject knowledge, academic skills and professional competences. These training programs are conducted at various centers at the state, district and block levels.
In addition, DSEL conducts a secure district level SSLC answer sheet evaluation process at various evaluation centers.
Use of this mobile application ensures attendance identification of eligible permanent employees through secure login with facial recognition of employees, officials said, adding that attendance is reflected on the departmental dashboard and reports are quickly sent to departmental superiors.
“Steps have been taken to identify traffic in a manner that leaves no room for discrepancies and corrections with the help of modern technologies such as GIS and AI,” the order said.
In addition, relevant departments of individual departments have been asked to use the data reports for teacher performance analysis, teacher allocation, staff rationalization and salary payment.
Teachers, SDMC welcome move
The move was welcomed by teachers and the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC).
“The government’s move to introduce the Kartavya-KAAMS mobile app for teachers and staff attendance is right. But the government should take appropriate steps to ensure that teachers’ personal information is not leaked or hacked in any way,” said the principal of a government school in Bengaluru.
G. Umesh Gangavadi, State President, SDMC, said, “Government is also planning to implement attendance system for school children. However, teacher attendance is important in schools and the government has been asked to introduce face recognition system for teachers’ attendance before students. It is good that the government is now implementing teacher and staff attendance through a separate mobile app.”
