A day after the Kerala Congress (M) president took exception to his “prodigal son” remark, Kerala Congress leader Apu John Joseph on Sunday clarified that Jose K. Mani and his party had misunderstood the intent as well as the context of his statement.
Speaking to the media, the elected Thodupuzha MLA said he had taken out the phrase “prodigal son” from the Bible and expressed regret if it caused any discomfort to Mr. Mani. He added that the remark was never intended as a personal insult to anyone.
‘In Hearty Spirit’
He said his statement of welcoming the Kerala Congress (M) with open arms was made with all sincerity. “My comments were guided by a genuine wish that KM Mani’s party does not disappear. It will not be healthy for the political system of Kerala,” he said. Mr. Joseph said his comments were driven by political sentiment, seeking to bring the KC(M) back into the mainstream. He emphasized that his invitation was given in a cordial spirit.
Mr Joseph, son of Kerala Congress president PJ Joseph, extended the invitation to the KC(M) shortly after the Assembly election results were announced. The KC(M), however, took strong exception to the remarks, terming them as an attempt to insult the faction led by Mr. Jose K. Mani.
