About two dozen members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) on Sunday resigned from the party in Palakkad to protest the demotion of an area committee member who criticized the party’s district secretary.
The mass resignation from four CPI(M) branch committees followed an escalating rift between EN district secretary Suresh Babu and area committee member and also Palakkad city councilor Abdul Shukoor.
Mr. Shukoor was demoted recently after he allegedly leveled allegations against the district leadership during an area committee meeting.
Those who resigned on Sunday alleged that the district secretary had consistently sidelined and humiliated Mr. Shukoor. They also demanded the removal of the secretary from his post.
The dissidents said they planned to hold a convention for party members who allegedly faced humiliation and were forced to leave the CPI(M). The convention to be held later this month will be led by an elected MLA from North Malabar, they said.
Mr. Shukoor is said to be considering resigning from his posts, including being a member of the Palakkad Municipal Council.
