Royal Challengers Bengaluru star Virat Kohli endured a disappointing overnight milestone after registering a golden duck while chasing a modest target of 167 against Mumbai Indians in Raipur on Sunday, May 10.
Kohli, who was playing his 278th Indian Premier League game, equaling the number of appearances by Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, fell trying to drive Deepak Chahar to long-off but instead offered a catch at mid-on to Raji Bawa.
This marked Kohli’s second duck in a row since he was dismissed for a two-ball duck against Lucknow Super Giantswhere he was bowled by pacer Prince Yadav, highlighting a rare low for the veteran over the following innings.
Earlier in the match, Rohit Sharma, also making his 278th IPL appearance, scored a quick 22 off 10 balls before being dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has been ruled out for the ongoing season after being ruled out with a calf injury before the start of the tournament.
Against LSG, Kohli was dismissed by a sharp delivery from Prince Yadav, but against MI, the dismissal came from an aggressive shot that went wrong. Deepak Chahar bowled a full, wide outswinger and Kohli tried to drive it over mid on. However, he failed to generate the required power, the bat closed early and the ball fell away from inner half, resulting in a simple catch at a comfortable height for Bawa.
KOHLI’S RARE IPL DUCKS IN IPL HISTORY
Today’s dismissal against MI on May 10 also marked Kohli’s 12th duck in IPL history and his second wicket since April 23, 2023 when he fell on the first ball against Rajasthan Royals’ Trent Boult.
Before these back-to-back ducks in the 2026 season, Kohli’s previous golden duck in the IPL run chase came back in 2017 against the Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders in an infamous match where RCB were bundled out for just 49 runs at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The last instance of Kohli registering ducks in the IPL came in 2022, against LSG on 19 April and Sunrisers Hyderabad on 23 April.
Despite the setback, Kohli’s IPL 2026 campaign remains steady. He has already amassed 379 runs in 10 matches and is on course for another 600-plus run season, having crossed the milestone in each of the last three editions.
