The Thrissur Rural Police have arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly attempting to murder a youth in a hammer attack near a gymnasium in Thrikkur village.
The accused, Cyril of Potty, was taken into custody for the attack on Deenas Davis (37), a native of Marathakkara. Deenas suffered serious head injuries and underwent emergency surgery at a private hospital in Thrissur.
The attack took place near a gymnasium in Nellichod on Saturday around 7.30 pm. Police said Cyril arrived in the area nearly two hours ago and was waiting outside the gym wearing a helmet. When Deenas got out after practice, Cyril hit him from behind with a hammer. When the victim collapsed, he allegedly punched him twice more in the head in an attempt to kill him.
The accused fled the spot on a bike taken from the spot, later abandoned it in a nearby compound before fleeing on his own bike.
A special investigation team led by District Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar launched an intensive investigation and deployed around 25 policemen in Marathakkara, Pudukad, Kodakara, Chalakudy and Ollur. Surveillance and scientific investigation helped identify and track down the suspect within a day.
During questioning, Cyril allegedly admitted to being in a relationship with the victim’s wife and planning to remove Deenas to live with her. Police said he bought the hammer from Chalakudy and even had petrol with him, allegedly intending to set the victim on fire after the attack.
Police said the crime was premeditated and driven by the accused’s relationship with the victim’s wife.
