Urvil Patel set Chepauk on fire on the night of May 10 with one of the wildest knocks the Indian Premier League (IPL) has ever seen as he smashed a 13-ball fifty for Chennai Super Kings against Lucknow Super Giants. The innings helped him equal Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest half-century in IPL history.
And he did it in the 204 chase.
IPL, CSK vs LSG: UPDATE | SCORECARD
After Sanju Samson fell for a quick 28 off 14 balls, there was little opening for LSG to slow the game down. Urvil made sure that never happened. The youngster walked in and immediately began picking apart the pitchers, turning the Chepauk chase into utter chaos.
URVIL PATEL HITS FIVE SIXES IN A ROW
The madness properly began against Avesh Khan.
Urvil smashed the last three balls of the fifth over for three sixes in a row and suddenly the pressure shifted completely back to LSG. But the bigger moment came right after.
Instead of batting himself in the next over, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad trusted Urvil to continue the attack and promptly bowled him against Digvesh Rathi.
Result? Two more sixes immediately.
Five sixes in a row over two overs.
For a second, it actually looked like Urvil might recreate the kind of six-run carnage that Riyan Parag created in IPL 2025 when he smashed six consecutive sixes against KKR.
Urvil narrowly misses after the next ball goes for four, but then casually blasts another 98m six anyway.
Chepauk had completely lost his mind by then.
In the next match against Mohammed Shami, he finally got his fifty and reached the landmark in just 13 balls to equal Jaiswal’s all-time IPL record.
HOW URVIL PATEL CELEBRATED HIS IPL RECORD
The 50th birthday party made the moment even better.
As the crowd roared inside Chepauk, Urvil reached into his pocket and pulled out a handwritten note that said, “This is for you, Dad.”
He then held it up towards the stands before diving into the applause.
Before Urvil’s strike, LSG looked well in control after passing 200, thanks mainly to Josh Inglis’ innings and some late hits from Shahbaz Ahmed.
ČSK’s record in big chases didn’t exactly help confidence either. Chennai have not successfully chased down a target of 180+ in the IPL since 2018.
But Urvil’s innings in a handful of overs completely changed the mood of the game.
Urvil’s fiery knock finally came to an end in the 10th over when Shahbaz Ahmed dismissed him for 62, ending one of the most explosive innings of IPL 2026 so far.
That knock from the 27-year-old consisted of nine fours and seven sixes.
WHO IS URVIL PATEL?
Born on 17 October 1998 in Mehsana, Gujarat, Urvil Patel has quietly built a reputation as one of the most explosive strikers on the domestic Indian circuit.
The Gujarat batsman is known for going hard from the first ball and much of that journey has started at home. His father, Mukesh Patel, a former sprinter and PE teacher, introduced him to the sport early on, while his parents regularly traveled long distances to Ahmedabad so that Urvil could train better. Cricket schedules often dictated how the family planned everything else.
Urvil first made headlines during the 2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy when he smashed a 41-ball hundred for Gujarat against Arunachal Pradesh, the second-fastest Indian List A century after Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball blitz.)
