Sanju Samson said he was living every child’s dream, sharing the CSK dressing room with MS Dhoni and recalling how he was left in awe of the Indian legend during his childhood. Samson has been an ardent fan of Dhoni for a long time and spoke candidly about coming to CSK and spending time with the former Indian captain.
During the latest episode of the Super Kings podcastSamson revealed the story of how his Dhoni fandom started. The wicketkeeper said he was still a small boy when he first saw Dhoni play when he sported his iconic long-haired look.
While the Indian legend struggled in his first few outings, Samson recalled how he became the poster boy of Indian cricket with his 148 against Pakistan and 183 against Sri Lanka in Jaipur.
“I was in the 4th or 5th standard, very small. I remember seeing this guy with long hair going out to bat for India. He got out in a couple of matches and then suddenly he made a hundred against Pakistan. He made 183, then he kept scoring big. I became a big fan from then on,” said Samson.
Samson revealed that he became such a big fan of Dhoni that he started carrying a cutout of the legendary wicketkeeper in the popular children’s drink Boost in his personal diary.
“After that he was everywhere – posters, media, commercials. He appeared in Boost ads. We drank Boost at home and there was a sticker on the bottle. I remember cutting out Mahi bhai’s face from the sticker and pasting it on my diary,” said Samson.
‘LUCKY TO BE HERE’
The CSK star revealed that he often chats with Dhoni and the IPL legend constantly gives him advice.
“From that moment to where I am now, what more can I say? I sit with him, talk to him, play games with him, go to his room and ask him anything I want. He also gives me advice. It’s been a dream, more than a dream actually. I think that’s what any kid would dream of and I feel very lucky to be here,” Samson said.
Samson has scored 402 runs in 10 matches while Dhoni is yet to feature in a game for LSG.
