The Wayanad district panchayat in association with the District Literacy Mission will set up study centers in all local self-government institutions to offer various equivalent courses.
District panchayat chairperson Chandrika Krishnan said that equivalency courses play a key role in bringing back into the mainstream those who have left the education system for various reasons. She added that considerable efforts would be made to involve all eligible people in the district in the literacy programme.
Ms. Krishnan launched a district-level registration drive for equivalency courses organized by the District Literacy Mission on Friday (May 8).
District Literacy Mission authorities said that online registration facilities for equivalency courses are available in all local government institutions in the district through literacy preracks. To ensure the success of the programme, a district meeting of grama panchayat presidents, secretaries and chairmen of education and welfare standing committees will be convened under the chairmanship of the district panchayat president.
As part of the registration campaign, a meeting of officials from various departments will also be held under the leadership of District Collector DR Meghashree. Core groups will be formed at the panchayat level to coordinate education activities in the area of equivalence. Classes will only take place on Sundays and public holidays.
A special scheme will be introduced to provide free educational facilities for those facing financial difficulties. Course fee will be waived off for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. Those who have completed 17 years and passed Class VII can enroll in the SSLC equivalent course, while those who have completed 22 years and passed SSLC can enroll in the Higher Secondary Equivalence course.
