Assam Rifles personnel on Saturday (May 9, 2026) secured the release of a Manipur woman who was abducted by members of the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) and Village Volunteers Eastern Zone during a pre-dawn attack on Tangkhul Naga villages in Kamjong district along the Indo-Myanmar border on May 7.
A paramilitary spokesman said the release of Olina Ningshen, 45, was secured from the kidnappers at a location south of Z. Choro village “under the supervision” of the Assam Rifles, intelligence and other agencies.
According to a statement by the paramilitary force, the abducted woman’s husband, the village director and members of civil society organizations (CSOs) were present at the release.
“Upon release, the family and CSO were taken to the unit’s headquarters in Chassad (near the international border) for formal handover and documentation,” the statement said. The locals were later relocated to their village of Khangphat Khn.
Medical and psychological assistance was provided to the abducted woman and others.
Troops of the Assam Rifles, India’s oldest armed police force, brought the riot reported on May 7 near Z. Choro village under control “despite challenging conditions”.
“Assam Rifles acted proactively during the incident and deployed several rescue teams. Ten houses affected by the violence were secured and civilians were evacuated to the nearest safe place,” the spokeswoman said.
Fifteen affected villagers, including women and children, were rescued and given humanitarian aid at the Assam Rifles camp near the international border.
Troops also detained an armed KNA-B member, identified as 38-year-old Lal Thag John, during search operations in Churachandpur district. It was later handed over to the local police along with the weapon, magazine and ammunition.
