The ongoing tussle between the three Congress chief ministerial candidates after the historic United Democratic Front (UDF) Assembly mandate has unleashed a tsunami of trolls and memes across social media.
From rib-tickling to downright biting, the satire on offer catered for every palate. “For the UDF government, the CM’s seat is no longer a chair but a bench,” read one meme accompanied by a photo of the bench, mocking the many contenders.
Another had VD Satheesan, KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala decked out as kings with the caption: “The war stopped on the third day from sunset,” a cheeky nod to the Kuruk war breaks in the Hindu epic Mahabharata.
Actor Bijukuttan played the role of a worried Pinarayi Vijayan in Troll, who was racking his brain over being the CM’s caretaker for five years. Ganesh Kumar’s money counting film clip cast him as a flex-print owner. This was a clear indication of the windfall from the ‘flex war’ between the rival Congress camps across the state.
One meme simply crowned “KC Satheesh Chennithala” as the new CM of Kerala – an imaginative and downright hilarious mix of all three names. Another had Jagathy Sreekumar and the late Mamukkoya as voters from Kerala and Tamil Nadu discussing the election result. “Here the seats are ready, the fight for the CM begins,” says Jagathy, to which Mamukkoya retorts, “Here we have the CM ready, but seats are short.”
The more creative ones came with artificial intelligence generated videos as well. The viral video recreated Harikrishnans song sequence, swapping Mohanlal and Mammootty for Satheesan and Chennithala before Venugopal crash-landed and crooned a Bollywood tune.
The Left Democratic Front, which was voted out, was not spared either. A clip from the popular movie Thalavattam cast Jagathy as a CPI(M) supporter pleading with Mohanlal, who turned out to be a UDF supporter, to at least save seats as predicted by the polls. Another meme recast the heroes from the blockbuster movie In Harihar Nagar as LDF loyalists dissecting the defeat, with Jagadeesh’s hilarious character Appukuttana concluding that perhaps the Bevco outlets that remained closed on election day made the front.
