A disturbing video purportedly showing cucumber vendors coloring bright cucumbers bright green before selling them to passengers at the Katihar Junction railway station has sparked outrage on social media and led to an immediate crackdown by the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Nine shop assistants, including the woman in the viral video, were detained for questioning after the footage surfaced online, NDTV reported.
What does the video show?
The clip, said to have been filmed on platforms 7 and 8 of the railway station, showed two women sitting on the platform applying a bright green substance to peeled or discolored cucumbers before offering them for sale to passengers. The video quickly drew widespread criticism after allegations surfaced that a chemical dye was allegedly used to make the cucumbers look fresher and more attractive to passengers buying snacks during train journeys.
Sellers detained after video surfaced online
Cucumbers are widely sold at railway stations across the country, especially during the summer season, as travelers often buy them as a light and refreshing snack. However, the viral footage has alarmed many users due to the suspicion of the use of artificial colors on ready-to-eat foods.
According to an NDTV report, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) swung into action in Katihar after the video went viral online. Katihar RPF Inspector Vikram said nine women involved in selling cucumbers in this manner at the station have been detained for questioning. Among those taken into custody was the woman seen in the viral clip.
Inspector Vikram further said that the accused woman allegedly confessed that the green substance used resembled the dye commonly added to sweets prepared during weddings. Officials are now investigating the exact nature and composition of the substance and are launching legal proceedings in the matter.
Social media users require strict measures
The video drew strong reactions online, with several users expressing anger and concern over the alleged practice. One user wrote: “This is extremely dangerous and should be considered a serious food safety violation.” Another commented: “People buy cucumbers thinking they are eating something healthy but this is shocking.”
A third user said: “Strict action should be taken against anyone who uses artificial colors on food.” Another wrote: “Railway authorities must regularly check vendors and food sold on platforms.”
One user added: “This is why people are afraid to eat anything sold in open places.” Another commented: “Passengers deserve safe and hygienic food, not such harmful practices.
