Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur to be renamed ‘Parshurampuri’ by the UP government

The Uttar Pradesh government in a cabinet meeting on Monday (July 6, 2026) approved a proposal to rename Jalalabad town, which falls under the Jalalabad Municipal Council area of Shahjahanpur district, as ‘Parshurampuri’. The decision becomes final after the notification is issued.

Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said, “A proposal submitted to the Cabinet called for renaming the city of Jalalabad as ‘Parshurampuri’. The Council of Ministers approved the proposal. The relevant departments will now handle the administrative and legal formalities related to the renaming. The name of the city will then be changed in all government records, departmental documents and other official records as per the prescribed official records.”

An official statement by the UP government said, “The city of Jalalabad is known as the birthplace of Bhagwan Parshuram. It finds significant mention in mythological records and scriptures. Due to this historical and religious significance, public representatives and local residents are demanding that the city be renamed ‘Parshurampuri’. After the Government of India approved the proposal, so did the state government.”

“This is a calculated decision by the BJP in an election year, but it will not help them. It is meant to divert attention from the Ram Temple scam,” UP Congress president Ajay Rai said.
