Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner HV Darshan said on Friday that the administration has identified 92 flood-prone areas and 88 landslide-prone areas and adequate precautions are being taken ahead of the onset of the southwest monsoon.
He was reacting to District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao’s directive to take appropriate precautionary measures in areas prone to floods, waterlogging and landslides after identifying them in advance before the onset of monsoon at a review meeting here.
Mr. Darshan said that the silt accumulated in the main rainwater channels (rajakaluves) is being removed using earthmoving machinery and claimed that most of the channels have already been cleared of silt.
Earlier, the minister had asked the officials concerned to frequently visit areas prone to floods, waterlogging and landslides and take immediate action after assessing the situation. The work on desilting the rainwater drains should be accelerated. In this regard, the concerned departments should work in mutual coordination, Mr. Rao said.
Noting that desilting work is underway, the DC said eight locations where marine erosion is likely to occur have been identified and steps have been taken to mitigate the risk. He said control centers at district and taluk level have been opened to function round the clock for emergency management.
While a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team was already present in the district, the NDRF teams were expected to arrive by the end of the month, Mr. Darshan said.
Zilla panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbari, Superintendent of Police K. Arun, Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Ravi Shankar and others were present.
