Who doesn’t like a bit of football drama off the pitch? Well, maybe if you’re a Real Madrid fan, then your answer is probably no, as the club has had one of the most turbulent days in its recent history. This culminated in Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde coming to blows after training, and he is taken to the hospital for stitches.
It has been a disappointing season for Los Blancos by their high standards as they look set for a second straight season without a trophy. Madrid are currently 11 points behind arch-rivals FC Barcelona, who they face in El Clasico on Sunday. They were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by Bayern Munich and went out early in the Copa del Rey.

This led to rumors of tension within the team and it all came to a head on Thursday.
HOW DID THE FIGHT START?
The initial altercation between Tchouameni and Valverde took place on Wednesday, according to Athletic. The back-up duo had a breakdown at the end of training and it continued in the dressing room.
On Thursday, multiple sources revealed to Athletic that a strong fight from Valverde had sparked a rift with Tchouameni. After training, Valverde clashed with the French midfielder and what started as a verbal dispute quickly turned into a physical altercation.
In the middle of the argument, Valverde lost his balance and hit his head on the dressing room table. He was taken to the hospital for preventive tests and has since been released.
RESULT
Soon after the dust settled, Real Madrid issued a statement that they had opened disciplinary proceedings against Valverde and Tchouameni.
“Real Madrid CF announces that following the events that took place this morning at the first team training session, it has decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings against our players Federico Valverde and Aurlien Tchouameni.”
“The club will announce the resolution of both cases in due course, once the appropriate internal procedures have been completed,” Real Madrid said in a statement.
They also provided an update on Valverde, saying the Uruguayan midfielder has suffered a traumatic brain injury and will need 10 to 14 days to recover.
“Following the tests carried out today by the Real Madrid medical service on our player Fede Valverde, a traumatic brain injury has been diagnosed.”
“Valverde is in good condition at home and will have to rest for 10 to 14 days as indicated by the medical protocols for this diagnosis,” Real Madrid said in a statement.
The seriousness of the incident led to an emergency meeting of the club’s senior officials, with the players remaining on the training pitch for more than an hour. The aim was to prevent further escalation of tensions after the episode left the team unbalanced and divided at a key stage of the season.
The situation comes on the back of another flare-up earlier in the week, when defender Alvaro Carreras admitted to a heated exchange with a team-mate, although he dismissed it as an isolated incident that had already been resolved, despite Spanish media reports linking him to a confrontation with Germany defender Antonio Rudiger.
VALVERDE ANSWERS
Valverde issued a lengthy statement on the incident, clarifying that there was no physical altercation between him and Tchouameni.
“Yesterday I had an incident with a teammate as a result of a game in practice where the fatigue of the competition and frustration makes everything bigger than it is.
“In a normal dressing room, these things can happen and are resolved between us without going public. It is clear that behind all this there is someone who has rushed to tell a story that has added to a season without titles, where Madrid is always the center of attention and everything is magnified.”
“We had another disagreement today. I accidentally bumped into a table during an argument and got a small cut on my forehead that required a routine hospital visit.”
“At no point did my teammate hit me, nor did I hit him, although I understand that it might have been easier for you to believe that we hit each other or that it was intentional, but that didn’t happen.”
“I feel that my anger at the situation, my frustration at the fact that some of us are coming to the end of the season, running on the last bit of energy and breaking down mentally, led me to argue with a team-mate,” Valverde said.
He apologized to the fans and said the incident was the culmination of a difficult season for Los Blancos.
“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry because the situation hurts me, the moment we’re going through hurts me. Madrid is one of the most important things in my life and I can’t remain indifferent. The result is the accumulation of things that end in a senseless argument, damage my image and give space to people to invent, slander and exaggerate an accident that we will never doubt anymore. If I have to defend him in the stadium, I will be the first to do it.”
“I didn’t want to talk until the end of the season. We got knocked out of the Champions League and I kept my anger and resentment to myself. We wasted another year and I didn’t feel like posting on social media when the only face I had to show was on the pitch and I feel like I did.”
“That’s why it hurts and saddens me the most that I have to go through this situation, which prevents me from playing another game because of medical decisions, because I always went to the end, to the last consequences, and it hurts me more than anyone that I can’t do that. I’m available to the club and my teammates to work together on any decision they think is necessary,” Valverde said.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN NEXT?
The Valverde-Tchouameni altercation is similar to that between Robinho and Thomas Gravesen in August 2006. The two men came to blows during pre-season training in Austria and Gravesen found himself out of the club in the same month.
It remains to be seen if Madrid decide to cash in on either Valverde or Tchouameni to save face after the incident. Los Blancos is a club that isn’t afraid to wield the ax on dressing room troublemakers.
However, the bust-up is the latest episode in the season that is more dramatic than Shakespeare. Madrid sacked Xabi Alonso midway through the season and Alvaro Arbeloa looks set to stay after an uninspiring spell.
