Women belonging to the Kondhu community of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) on Thursday urged the government to ensure safe drinking water in Dayarthi village under Jeenabadu panchayat in Ananthagiri mandal of Alluri Sitharama Raju district.
Villagers said about 450 indigenous residents of the hill settlement depended on contaminated water from the stream for drinking, resulting in frequent illnesses such as malaria, colds and fever. They claimed that despite the implementation of schemes like Jal Jeevan and Janman Mission, drinking water facilities have not reached their village.
Residents said road connectivity to the village had improved recently after Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan visited the area, but the problem of drinking water remained unresolved. They also pointed out that patients had to travel to Devarapalli in private vehicles for treatment, spending nearly ₹2,000 on transport.
The indigenous women, including Vantala Radha, Lakshmi, Kanthamma and Devi, demanded to be drilled and connected to the household water line. CPM district executive member K. Govinda Rao along with local leaders Sridhar, Somanna and Narsinga Rao urged the government to resolve the issue immediately and warned of a protest at the ITDA office if no action was taken.
